What Are Chords? A chord is a group of three or more notes. You can play them melodically, one note at a time, or harmonically, with all notes sounding together. They are chords regardless. The notes you group together will change the chord's sound and name. There are numerous combinations, and the most common way to learn them is through chord diagrams, also known as chord charts.

Major Banjo Chords Major chords have a "happy" sound and convey positive feelings through music. Major chords are always implied in music notation. If there is a single "E" above the notation, it means an "E Major" chord should be played at that point. Other chord qualities have specific markings. Major chords are the easiest to learn and knowing them allows you to play hundreds of songs.

Minor Banjo Chords Minor chords are the opposite of major chords and convey "sad" emotions through music. Knowing minor chords is the next step in mastering the banjo. They are represented by an "m" after the chord name. Minor chords sound "sad" because the "third" note in the related scale is lowered by half-step. Below are the fingerings for open minor chords.

Dominant 7th Banjo Chords These chords are named after the seventh scale degree in the chord structure, either as major 7, dominant 7, or diminished 7. Major 7th chords sound "jazzy" and have a smooth and pleasant sound. They are a great substitution for the block major chord fingering. Dominant 7th chords are featured in rock n roll and blues music. Diminished 7th chords are more advanced and typically occur in classical and jazz music.

Diminished Banjo Chords Below are the fingerings for basic diminished chords, often represented as "dim" or with a small circle "o". These chords have a lot of tension due to the tri-tone interval built into the chord structure. These chords need to progress and resolve well to a major chord.

Augmented Banjo Chords Augmented chords are dissonant but can be used creatively. Unlike the diminished chord that pulls to a major chord, the augmented chord is static and doesn't have much weight pulling in any direction. Augmented chords, designated with "aug" or a "+" symbol, consist of two major 3rd intervals stacked on top of each other. Another way to think of it is raising the 5th of any chord up a half-step.
